Rubber & Silicones

Synthetic Amorphous Silica (SAS) is also used as a filler for the reinforcement of polymers.

Additives such as SAS are widely used to reinforce polymers and improve properties like dimensional stability and scratch resistance. Indeed, without fillers, rubber or polymers would have no ‘strength’ and would behave more like a liquid. A key application is the use of pyrogenic silica in the production of silicone elastomers. Silica in rubber has become well known in recent years as it is a key element in “green” tyres, as using silica as a filler decreases fuel consumption thanks to lower energy loss in the tyre.
